FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Road Map Directs Visitors to CT FarmsMay 23, 2002 -- The Connecticut Farm Map, a detailed, full-scale road map featuring over 300 agricultural operations that sell their products directly to the public, will be available to the public in early June. The map will be launched by Lt. Governor Jodi Rell at a press conference on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Fish Family Farm, 20 Dimock Lane, Bolton, CT. The map was produced by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture and the Connecticut Department of Transportation under the leadership of the Connecticut Food Policy Council. The Council’s mission is to foster collaboration between state agencies to improve the state’s food system. “Ag-Tourism is a vital and growing part of our economic climate, and the map will help support the viability of Connecticut agriculture by promoting these destination operations,” said Shirley Ferris, Commissioner of the CT Dept. of Agriculture. The Connecticut Farm Map is a comprehensive road map that people can use even if they don’t plan to visit a farm. For those looking for an entertaining and educational road trip, the map features fun farm facts, farm photos, a listing of the 62 statewide Farmers’ Markets, a brief history of state agriculture, a crop calendar, and information about the Connecticut Department of Agriculture and the Connecticut Agricultural Extension System. Included are over 300 agricultural operations such as Farm Stands, Orchards, Christmas Tree Farms, Wineries, Dairies, Sugarhouses, Pick Your Own Farms, Nurseries/Greenhouses, Livestock Farms and even a Seafood Harvester. A brief descriptive narrative, address and contact information are included for each business. “We are pleased to partner in a project that puts our state’s farm businesses on the map, and will help to increase public awareness and appreciation of agriculture,” said James F. Byrnes, Acting Commissioner of the CT Dept. of Transportation. DOT staff provided the technical expertise needed to produce the map. The Connecticut Farm Map will be available to the public at no charge at tourism welcome centers, agricultural fairs and farms throughout the state.
